The Itsenäisyydenkatu underpass will be closed to vehicular traffic from 1 June 2026 for several years due to the construction of a new travel terminal. The closure will affect bus routes running through the underpass. Tram services will continue to operate through the tunnel as normal.

Bus routes 6, 42, and 90 will be diverted away from Hämeenkatu and Rautatienkatu. The new route will run via Yliopistonkatu.

• The terminus of route 6 will remain at Sorin aukio E on Suvantokatu.
• Routes 42 and 90 will terminate at the bus station, using platform 2.

Route 29 will operate via Tammela and Armonkallio. In addition, district heating works will begin at the northern end of Rautatienkatu, and the Kyttälä stops on Rongankatu will be out of service until autumn. Replacement stops are available at Vapriikki on Lapintie.
