With you for 20 years
Nysse is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Over the past two decades, public transportation in the Tampere region has undergone significant changes. What began as a bus service is now a network of buses, trams, and trains serving eight municipalities.
Nysse is considered to have been formed on April 1, 2006, when Tampere transitioned to the purchaser-provider model. The reform separated the organization of public transport from its actual operation and integrated public transport planning into city planning. The goal was to raise the level of service and reverse the decline in passenger numbers into growth.
Over the past two decades, this goal has been achieved with outstanding results. The decline in passenger numbers has turned into growth, and Nysse now carries over 55 million passengers a year. That’s twice as many as 20 years ago.
Thank you for traveling with us!
The 2006 bus routes will return on 1 April
To celebrate our anniversary year, we will be operating the 2006 bus routes on Wednesday 1 April (which is also April Fools' Day).
But what was the Nysse route network like 20 years ago?
In 2006, Nysse operated 27 routes. With a few minor exceptions, all routes were within Tampere; in other words, a single Nysse ticket did not allow you to travel to Nokia or Kangasala, for example. The municipalities surrounding Tampere were not included in the Nysse service area until later.
You can view the 2006 route network on the Remix map service. Please note that the schedules shown on the service are incorrect.
