Anniversary magazine
To celebrate our 20th anniversary, Nysse has published a magazine that brings together stories about everyday life in public transportation, its development, and the people behind it. The magazine looks back at the past, examines the present, and looks ahead to the future—highlighting both the small and the big moments on our shared journey.
You can download and read the entire magazine in Finnish as a PDF file. During the anniversary year, you can pick up a free printed copy at distribution points located in all Nysse municipalities. We’re also handing out the magazine during Nysse’s anniversary tour.
On this page, you’ll find English summaries of the articles from the anniversary publication. Take a look and discover the stories that interest you!
Municipalities in the spotlight – Building a better day-to-day life together
Public transportation in the Tampere metropolitan area is being developed in collaboration with local municipalities to ensure smooth travel from one place to another in everyday life. The partnership between the municipalities and Nysse facilitates seamless travel and lays the groundwork for the development of the entire region.
Public transportation connections boost Lempäälä’s appeal
“For us, public transportation isn’t just an additional feature—it’s one of the fundamental principles of urban planning. We aim to locate new developments near good public transportation connections so that daily life runs smoothly even without a private car. This is being planned in close collaboration with Nysse.
Nysse provides us with valuable insights, for example, on the locations of stops and the functionality of travel chains, to ensure that getting around is as easy as possible. Stations and key stops are important hubs around which housing, services, and workplaces often cluster.
When transfers from bus to train are seamless and stops are located correctly, public transit truly functions as a good travel option in everyday life.”

Every 15 minutes to the tram – connecting service makes daily life easier for Ylöjärvi residents
“The connecting transport service to the tram in Ylöjärvi has started well, and our collaboration with Nysse is working excellently. With connecting buses running every 15 minutes almost every day of the week, using public transportation is easier than ever. You no longer have to check the schedules as closely as before.
In Hiedanranta, you transfer from the bus to the tram, which takes you quickly to downtown Tampere and beyond. Many people use the service not only for commuting but also for leisure trips—such as going to the theater or a concert.
Alternatively, you can leave your car at the free park-and-ride parking lot in Hiedanranta and continue to the city center by tram. The park-and-ride service makes getting around Tampere effortless.”

On the way to Pirkkala’s tram era with Nysse
“In Pirkkala, public transportation has been developed in collaboration with Nysse over many years. For example, on the Naistenmatkantie public transport corridor, buses run approximately every seven minutes on weekdays, so there’s hardly any need to check the schedule.
However, we are now on the threshold of a new phase, as the Pirkkala City Council has decided to build a tram line. This is a significant decision for us. The tram will improve accessibility throughout the entire urban area and integrate Pirkkala more closely into the regional public transit system.
At the same time, it provides an opportunity to build a growing municipality sustainably based on public transportation. The collaboration with Nysse has played an important role in this development.”

Rail connections are boosting Nokia's development
“The development of rail connections is of great importance to Nokia. They increase the opportunities to use public transportation and make travel chains smoother. The area around the Nokia station has been developed precisely for this purpose—the goal is to make it a hub where people can arrive by Nysse bus, bicycle, or their own car and continue their journey by train.
The ticket partnership between Nysse and VR is also a key part of this overall vision, as it makes travel chains truly functional. When you can transfer from a bus to a train using the same ticket, traveling becomes significantly easier. Solutions like these also influence how people perceive the city’s appeal and how natural everyday travel throughout the entire metropolitan area becomes.”

Public transportation stimulates Kangasala's growth
“Public transportation plays a huge role in Kangasala’s growth. When I took office as mayor in 2014, I wanted to make frequent, fast, and affordable public transportation a strategic factor in the city’s success.
In this ribbon-shaped urban area, bus intervals had previously been as long as 40 minutes. We set out to reduce that first to 30 minutes, then to 15 minutes, and finally to about seven minutes. As the service improved, so did usage: from a few hundred thousand trips to over 1.3 million per year.
This development would not have been possible without close cooperation with Nysse. Thanks to this, Kangasala has truly become a public transit city where daily life runs smoothly for work, study, and leisure.”

A landscape office travels along the routes of Vesilahti
“On the routes in Vesilahti, my workday takes me through fields and forests. I often say I work in an ‘office with a view’ where the seasons appear in a completely different way than in a traditional office.
On the main roads, stops are fewer and farther apart, so there isn’t that constant hustle and bustle at the stops. That keeps the driving peaceful. In the countryside, distances are long, which is why public transportation is an important part of daily life—without it, you’d have to use your own car.
Nysse’s services keep connections running smoothly and help many people get to school, work, and their hobbies. Good connections ensure that you can live in the peace of the countryside and still get around easily, for example to Lempäälä and from there, for example, take the train on to Tampere.”

Orivesi offers a small municipality’s perspective on regional public transportation
“The atmosphere surrounding decision-making on regional public transportation has been really positive. The committee works together across municipal boundaries, and issues are examined from the perspective of the entire city region.
The preparation of Nysse is of very high quality, and efforts are made to take into account the wishes and needs of the different municipalities. Even smaller municipalities have a voice, as long as they are proactive and bring their own perspectives to the table.
Regional public transportation is extremely important to Orivesi. For example, train connections to Tampere and the Nysse ticketing system have significantly improved mobility. When cooperation works and solutions are developed together, we can build a functional public transportation system for the entire region.”

Sustainable mobility is at the heart of Tampere’s climate strategy
“Developing public transportation in collaboration with Nysse is important to the City of Tampere so that it is easy to make sustainable choices in everyday life and getting around is smooth. Sustainable mobility includes walking, cycling, and public transportation.
Sustainable mobility is key to a bright future, as transportation is one of Tampere’s largest sources of emissions. That is why we need big solutions, such as trams and electric buses, but also everyone’s everyday choices. Not everything has to change at once: simply leaving the car at home once a week is a big step.
When different mobility options work well together, sustainable modes of transport become a natural part of everyday life.”

Tram is heading decisively towards tomorrow
When people talk about public transportation in Tampere, they’re talking more and more about the tram. Since 2021, it has brought a new sense of reliability and appeal to the city’s transportation system. The tram and buses complement each other: together, they form the backbone of Nysse.
