Revision of route plan for the 2026 summer season

The route network overhaul in Northern Tampere was originally scheduled for the 2026–2027 winter season, primarily due to the problems caused by slippery winter roads. The new route network will be introduced as early as the summer of 2026, as the area’s current transport contract expires.

Bus service is planned based on feedback received from customers, passenger numbers, and observations regarding road conditions.

 

  • Route 90 will serve commuter and leisure trips bound for the Tampere city centre.
  • Feeder route 15 remains unchanged. The line, running between Sorila and Kaupin kampus, has a transfer connection to tram line 1.
  • Revised routes 91-93 will primarily serve the area’s school trips, therefore they run only on days when primary and secondary schools are in session, and start in August, during the winter season 2026-2027.

 

The Tampere region Public Transit Committee approved this plan for Northern Tampere on 23.4.2025.

Routes in northern Tampere for the 2026 summer season

Passengers

Around 4400 people live in northern Tampere, almost half of which live in the Kämmenniemi statistical area. A large proportion of trips are concentrated on route 90, which runs via the Tampere city centre.

Passengers in smaller villages are mainly schoolchildren. Passenger numbers decrease significantly during summer holidays in the villages of Velaatta, Polso (Maisansalo), Viitapohja, and Aitolahti.

Passenger numbers on routes in northern Tampere only make up 1% of all boardings in Tampere. “Boardings” refers to every trip that begins (including transfers).

Bus fleet

The poor condition of roads in rural areas has caused several traffic accidents involving buses. According to the Inner Finland Economic Development Centre, funding for road improvements or better maintenance is not available.

The safety of school transportation can be improved with vehicles suitable for village roads. However, minibuses cannot be used as there are many schoolchildren and not everyone would fit on board.

Routes 90–93 will be operated by Koiviston Auto Tampere Oy going forward.

Finances

A significant amount of money is used for mobility in northern Tampere. The average public subsidy needed for Nysse routes is 0,86€/boarding. Subsidy needs on routes in northern Tampere are:

  • Under 2€ for route 90 Terälahti - City centre
  • 13€ for route 91 Aitoniemi - Sorila
  • 15€ for route 92 Kämmenniemi - Viitapohja - Sorila
  • 12€ for route 93 Terälahti - Teisko kko - Kämmenniemi
  • 29€ for route 94 Maisansalo (the line was discontinued 4.8.2024)

“Boarding” refers to every trip that begins (including transfers). “Public subsidy” refers to the funding proportion not covered by ticket sales.

The more people use the route, the less of the tax money paid by residents goes toward operating it.

The financial data covers the period from January to July 2024. The subsidy amount has been rounded to the nearest whole euro.

Request for appeal: route 90

An appeal (in Finnish) was filed against the decision made by the Public Transportation Committee in April, as a result of which Route 90 was sent back for further revision. We collected feedback on two different route options:

  • A direct connection to the Tampere city centre approximately every 70 minutes.
  • A connection with a transfer to the Tays area approximately every 60 minutes.

Opinions were practically evenly split between the options. In Kämmenniemi and Terälahti, the majority of respondents favoured the direct connection to the city centre. The feedback survey was open from November 10–16 November 2025. On 3 December 2025, the Committee decided that Route 90 would run directly to Tampere city centre.
